Would you like the long answer or the short answer?
First, the long answer. The long answer is after you’ve done some solid planning — financial, emotional, and spiritual planning — and that planning indicates that you are adequately prepared to quit and begin your next endeavor.
The short answer is — you will know. Intuitively you will know, if you listen to your heart and if you ignore all signs from the outer world (like your friends and family thinking you are crazy) and follow your inner truth.
Now, would you like the best answer?
The best answer is — do both the long answer and the short answer.
I’ve helped hundreds of people prepare for moving from employment to self-employment and those that experience the easiest transition create an “escape plan”, and then trust their own intuition on when they feel the best time is to actually pull the trigger and quit their job.
I spent about 18 months planning my escape and then picked a date to quit that felt right which I decided would be on my 50th birthday. What an awesome present to myself it was. And it worked out great.
And I didn’t do this alone. I had been working with a business coach when we determined, early on in our engagement, that I would be far happier being self-employed than I would be working for others. That revelation resonated to the very core of my being.
We spent the next 18 months together planning my escape. We discussed how much money I needed to save, all the logistics of building my own business, and what inner work needed to occur in order to create the mindset of a successful business owner.
It was an exciting time that transformed my entire life, all for the better. I am making more money than I did in corporate America doing work I love with much more freedom while being able to be who I am. It just doesn’t get better than that!
