Six weeks ago we rescued our second chihuahua mix. She’s cute and adorable and five pounds of what seems like never ending motion.
Luna is younger than we were told she was, and she’s a handful. She’s curious and into everything. I’d forgotten how much work puppies are and I realized today that puppies and new businesses have a lot in common.
Puppies need your attention in a lot of different ways. They seem to move in multiple directions at once. They don’t always do what you want them to do. And they are messy.
New businesses are similar. They are often more work than you thought they would be. They need your attention in a lot of different areas all at once. They sometimes want to move in directions you didn’t anticipate. And they are a lot of work.
But just like puppies, businesses grow. They mature. They settle in. They start to sustain you and they get far easier to run.
Whether you’re raising a puppy or growing a business, when you are in the midst of the beginning stages it can be exhausting. Unexpected things tend to happen. It can be stressful.
But before you know it, your business begins to gain it’s stride. Things calm down, you begin to focus on the things that are truly important, and soon you have a well-oiled machine, so to speak.
After only six weeks Luna is starting to understand that we are her family. She’s calming down and settling in and requires a little less work.
I’m blessed that my business is now mature, sustains me and brings me so much joy. And now I have the added blessing of a sweet little puppy, asleep on my lap as I write this.
Getting out of corporate America has given me the ability to enjoy these precious moments. Yes, it was a little scary stepping into the unknown, but it was so worth it.
So is Luna.
Oh yes, and don’t forget, both puppies and businesses need a lot of love.
